Finding Peace

Our Worldly Worries

“What will I do if I lose my job?”
“Do I have enough money to retire?”
“It’s not safe to travel because of the terrorist threats.”
“I can’t imagine losing my loved one to cancer.”

We don’t ask for much. All we want is to have enough to live on and to enjoy the simple things in life—to take care of our family and to keep them safe. Yet even the simple things in life can turn into anxieties.

We don’t know what will happen tomorrow – jobs are unstable, and natural disasters or new diseases spring up every day. With new bacterial strains, we can’t even feel safe about the food we eat.

Toiling for Peace

As a result, we try to do things to put our mind at ease by listening to the experts: Eat well. Exercise regularly. Invest wisely. Learn new skills. Isn’t it ironic how hard we must toil to have some peace?

Even when we finally achieve some material stability in our lives, other things crop up. Internal struggles and interpersonal conflicts are inevitable and harder to control. Against our best intentions, we argue with family and friends. We can’t communicate with our parents or our kids. We fight over trivial things with our spouse. We can’t stand our boss.

It’s hard to control the course and direction of our lives because something is missing. Even our brief moments of peace can be snatched away without warning.

“What am I supposed to do?”
“Is there a better way?”

The Way to True Peace

True peace is unattainable through personal efforts or sheer will. It comes only from Jesus Christ.

He said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

John 14:27

It’s an audacious promise to give peace to anyone who asks. How is it possible?  What does Jesus know about our troubles?

Jesus was a poor carpenter’s son and a traveling teacher. However, Jesus wasn’t just a man. He is also God. He came to earth to show us how to live a life of peace. Jesus overcame His troubles and anxiety, and proved by word and deed that He has the power to do the same for us today.

Listen carefully to His words; He does not give peace as the world gives. It’s so hard for us to attain peace on our own because we try to find it in the things of the world. We try to gain peace through money, friends, or the amenities of the world. Yet those cannot lead to true peace.

“In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

We have peace through Jesus because He has overcome the world, and can give us the peace we cannot gain ourselves. This gives us the confidence and reassurance to walk through life without worrying.

A Christian Peace

We should be of good cheer, but not only because someone 2,000 years ago had overcome the world and its troubles. Jesus, the almighty God, is still alive today and promises to give us His peace. God is spirit, and He can instill His immeasurable peace within us today.

Simply trust in Jesus and experience a peace that surpasses understanding, an inner strength that is impossible to explain. As we put our faith in His power to help us, He will guard our hearts and minds, filling them with His peace. We can live life without fear, without worry, and without uncertainty.

What’s the price of this ultimate peace? Nothing. Just believe. Let the peace of Christ come into your heart and unload all your anxieties on Him. The toughest step may be the first: to completely open yourself to Jesus Christ. Once you take that step, you’ll discover that His peace is real.

Come and know Jesus today!
